1871 Mosquito Theory

Check out this interesting Minneapolis Tribune article from 1871:
http://www.startribune.com/local/blogs/128209408.html. It's amazing how far science has come in 140 years. Among the few things the writer did get right is that mosquitoes do "cause a good deal of annoyance". Click the article to find out how they compared mosquitoes to elephants, and how they projected how dangerous a kitten-sized mosquito could be!

Ehrlichiosis- The Latest in Serious Tick-borne Diseases

With 25 cases identified in Minnesota and Wisconsin in the last two years and many more gone undiagnosed, Ehrlichiosis gives us another reason to despise ticks. Worse yet, unlike the distinguishable bullseye rash left by Lyme's Disease, Ehrlichiosis leaves no visible rash. Even more dangerously, symptoms of infection begin ocurring almost immediately after the bite. For more information, check out last night's WCCO story at http://minnesota.cbslocal.com/2011/08/03/new-tick-borne-disease-identified-in-minnesota-wisconsin/ and KTTC's story at http://www.kttc.com/story/15204570/mayo-clininc-finds-new-bacteria-causing-tick-borne-illness.

Frequently Asked Question (FAQ) #3

Question: What if it rains right after my scheduled treatment?

Answer: As long as the product has had the requisite 30 minutes to dry, rain and water should not wash away the treatment. It is not water soluble and, after dry, should not be affected. If it begins raining before your treatment is dry and you notice a diminished effectiveness, give us a call at 877-239-BITE(2483) and we will retreat at no cost to you.

Not-So-Fun Fact #1: Mosquito Math

Mosquitoes can breed anywhere there's standing water for a week after a rainfall -- even a hoofprint in the mud can host hundreds of eggs! And, since they hatch in 1-5 days, the eggs that a mosquito lays will all too quickly be laying more of their own! Assuming all potential eggs survive, those eggs will turn exponentially into more than 1.3 billion mosquitoes by the end of the month. Yikes!

Frequently Asked Question (FAQ) #3

Question:    What type of product do you use?

Answer:     Mosquito Squad employs pyrethroids, a synthetic copy of pyrethrin.  Pyrethrins, insecticides derived from an extract of chrysanthemum flowers, typically break down around four to six hours after application.   In contrast, pyrethroids, break down around 21 days after application, offering your family much longer protection.  These are the same products commonly used in pet flea/tick collars and sprays.  Pyrethroids pose little risk to human health and to the environment.  They bind strongly to soil and are not easily absorbed by plant roots.  Because of this, pyrethroids usually do not contaminate groudwater.  Sunlight and other compounds in the atmosphere break pyrethroids down quickly, resulting in little environmental or air contamination.

Question:
What animal kills the most people?

Answer:
Currently the mosquito kills more people every year than any other animal.

Here are some numbers:

•over 5,000,000 people worldwide died every year at the height of the Black Death in 1349 (probably bubonic plague bacterium carried by rat fleas in turn carried by black rats), eventually killing 30% to 60% of all humans in Europe.
•1,200,000 people worldwide died in motor vehicle traffic accidents in 2004, as estimated by the WHO. 41,900 people in the US died in motor vehicle traffic accidents in 2007, according to the CDC.
•781,000 people worldwide die each year from malaria (from single-celled Plasmodium protists carried by mosquitoes) according to the WHO.

•20,000 to 94,000 people worldwide die each year from snakebites, according to Kasturiratne et. al.
•52,495 people in the US die from influenza (a virus) and pneumonia (most often caused by pneumococcus bacteria) in 2007, according to the CDC.

•34,598 people died from suicide in the US, and 18,009 people died from homicide in the US, in 2007 according to the CDC.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) #1

FAQ #1:  How does Mosquito Squad control mosquitoes?
Answer:  During your first treatment, our technicians treat standing water pools and any other potential mosquito breeding sites with larvacide to kill any exsisting larvae and prevent future larvae.  Then our technicians will perform a Barrier Spray to eradicate any adult mosquitoes currently in your yard, and build a barrier against any mosquitoes that enter your yard after treatment.  A technician will then return to your property every 21 days to maintain the barrier against mosquitoes.

What we do!

Mosquito Control with Mosquito Squad, the Mosquito Exterminator
Mosquito control is now a reality thanks to Mosquito Squad, the mosquito exterminator. Our affordable, effective and convenient mosquito control solutions offer something for everyone. For residential customers, Mosquito Squad’s mosquito control 21-day barrier spray is an extremely popular choice. A Mosquito Squad mosquito control professional temporarily fogs the area surrounding your home and backyard. The result is a proven, trusted barrier of mosquito control protection that kills mosquitoes for a period of 21 days. Our EPA-registered mosquito control solution is similar to that used on dairy and horse farms to protect animals from bothersome and dangerous mosquitoes, ticks and other insect intruders. When the mosquito lands on a piece of treated vegetation or landscaping, they ingest our mosquito control solution and die, eliminating the mosquito problem.
Another popular mosquito control solution is our 14-day all-natural spray. Made from all-natural ingredients, our all-natural mosquito control solution kills adult mosquitoes on contact, and repels other mosquitoes for two weeks.
For families and businesses with more severe mosquito control needs, our Mosquito Squad automatic misting system is a great solution. Our mosquito control solution is held in a secure container on the property and is mixed automatically with water to create a fine mosquito extermination mist that is delivered to targeted problem areas. Attached to a timer, our mosquito control misting system delivers protection against mosquitoes and ticks continuously, around the clock, with short bursts of spray protection. Your Mosquito Squad professional will adjust the spray times to ensure peak protection when the problems mosquitoes are at their most bothersome and dangerous times.
And now Mosquito Squad mosquito control is also available for outdoor weddings, picnics, concerts, family reunions and other outdoor special events. Our special event spray is applied prior to the event to ensure optimum protection for the big day. As it’s protection lasts for several days, this larger scale mosquito protection is an excellent choice for outings and gatherings lasting several days.
And the same protective science and customer convenience methodology that is at the foundation of Mosquito Squad now has an intensive tick control solution to help stop the spread of Lyme disease.
Mosquito Squad tick control tubes are placed in areas where field mice build their nests. The tubes are filled with cotton that is treated with our tick control solution. Then nature’s food chain facilities the tick extermination process when the field mice take the cotton from the tubes to build their nests. The ticks that then feed on those field mice are eliminated when they come in contact with the cotton in the mouse nest or the product that has stuck to the mouse fur.
So for the best mosquito control, mosquito extermination solutions and intensive tick control, you’ve come to right place. Please enjoy your Mosquito Squad visit and be sure to reach out to us by phone or web contact form for more information. As the mosquito control expert, your local Mosquito Squad professional is available to speak to homeowner association groups and civic organizations, to help further the cause in protecting our citizens from the dangers of West Nile Virus, Lyme disease, Encephalitis, Dengue Fever, Malaria and other mosquito and tick-spread diseases. Our thought leadership and advocacy on mosquito control and disease prevention issues is unparalleled, as we are proud to be North America’s first, best and most trusted choice to eliminate mosquitoes and ticks and the diseases they can bring. Thank you.
