Scientists from Johns Hopkins are loading malarial mosquitoes with a modified gene so that their guts produce a substance that will kill the parasite they carry. Though it would be nearly impossible to load wild mosquitoes with this gene, it would be possible to insert this gene straight into their gut rather than into their genetic code.
